How to read a certificate of analysis (COA)
A practical checklist for batch identifiers, methods, results and laboratory verification.
Match the document to the product
Check the product name, batch identifier, sample description and report date against the material being supplied. Ask for clarification if identifiers do not match.
Read results, not just a pass label
Check which attributes were tested, the methods used, numerical results, units and acceptance criteria. One reported test does not stand in for all other quality checks.
Verify what is actually available
Ask the issuing laboratory how to verify a report. This website does not present an unavailable report as completed testing. If independent testing is arranged, agree on the sample and testing scope first.
